School gardens awarded

Schools in the Bexley area of London have been awarded for their efforts in the Bexley in Bloom competition.

Students from 20 schools in the Bexley area took part in the schools category of the regional gardens scheme.

The competition was designed to improve the scenery in the area and the students demonstrated knowledge of organic gardening and showed flair in their designs.

Vegetable patches and artistic flower arrangements provided organic food and visibly enhanced the area.

Bexley mayor Nick O'Hare awarded the top schools their prize vouchers which should help encourage the continuation of the project.

Bursted Wood Primary took first place for school gardens, winning a trophy and £65 gardening voucher, while Saint Paulinus School was awarded a trophy and a £30 voucher for the best vegetable patch.

Belvedere Infants and Nursery School got a £15 voucher for winning the heaviest pot of potatoes competition.

Bexley in Bloom is part of Britain in Bloom, which is the biggest horticultural campaign in Europe.
