Dorset County Council has handed an eight-year contract to local organic recycling company Eco Sustainable Solutions.

The company will now handle the county's organic waste, including any wood, plants and food.

Dorset County Council cabinet member for environment Hilary Cox spoke of the importance of sustainable waste management.

"Dealing with organic waste is going to become increasingly important as we strive to send less and less to landfill in order to meet strict European legislation," she told RWMinfo.com.

"We have had a long term contractual arrangement with Eco and we are very happy to be continuing this relationship which has diverted many thousands of tonnes away from landfill."

Eco Sustainable Solutions is in good hands with its managing director Trelawney Dampney a former head of the Composting Association.

While organic waste management companies help save landfill space on the large scale, UK residents can do their bit by composting their own waste.

Compost can be used to help grow nutritious fruit and veg, both in the garden and in the greenhouse.
