Tyneside youths feed local groups with own produce

A team of Tyneside kids have turned providers for local community groups by joining together to help grow food.

In a time when food and fuel bills are becoming more of a burden for the masses, Boldon Youth Project's members have taken up gardening and greenhouse skills to produce a range of fresh produce, which they then donate to local groups, according to the Shields Gazette.

The youths have proven very popular after their potatoes, beetroot, onions, eggs, strawberries, onions and cucumbers went down a treat with locals.

Neighbourhood management initiative manager Maria Anderson told the local newspaper that the children have enjoyed taking part in the project and that they are learning as they go.

"The group has been having great fun picking the produce and tending to the chickens and, in the process, they have learned a great deal about horticulture," she said.

The ambitious group are already planning to try their hand at growing a range of other fruit and veg, including peppers and tomatoes which usually grow best under glass.
