14:06:20 11th June 2009

Gardeners looking to pick up tips and interesting information may wish to visit the Royal Horticultural Society's Harlow Carr this Saturday and Sunday (June 13th and 14th).

The site is hosting the Beekeeping Open Weekend, with activities for greenhouse and garden lovers of all ages.

Older growers will be able to attend talks on how bees have an affect on the world of horticulture, while children will enjoy the crafts and quizzes on offer.

"Bees are an essential contributor to the success of the natural world and this event really highlights what they do," explained events manager Deborah Ellis.

She added the waggle dance - where visitors are taught how the creatures communicate - always proves popular.

Expert beekeepers will be on hand to distribute advice, while honey-based products will also be on sale.

Those wishing to take a break from the buzzing can try Harlow Carr's Summer Interest Trail, which lets them take in many of the highlights of the gardens.

Meanwhile, the RHS recently reported on a Garden Organic survey, which found heritage varieties of lettuce are more resilient than their modern counterparts.ADNFCR-1495-ID-19214418-ADNFCR
