Check out RHS gardens this winter

Garden and greenhouse enthusiasts have been encouraged to visit the Royal Horticultural Society's (RHS) Recommended Gardens this winter.

The organisation explained that while there are not many plants in bloom, it could be a beneficial experience to check out the vibrant bark on the trees as it can make an interesting feature in green spaces during the colder months.

There are also other types of plant which can enhance a garden when flowers have disappeared and trees have shed their leaves.

An array of attractive specimens exists in horticultural attractions around the UK, including the Betula utilis var at the Beth Chatto Gardens in Essex.

The Britzensis is also worth consideration with its vivid orange stems, while the polished copper bark of the Prunus serrula is also an attractive variety.

One of the more popular RHS gardens is Harlow Carr, with visitors granted admission until 15:00 GMT during the winter months.
