NEWS AND EVENTSNOTHING ELSE IS A HARTLEY.
The Greenhouse (see Photos), believed to have been made over 50 YEARS AGO in the early 1950’s, measures 9ft wide by 29ft long and 6ft 8inches in height and was one of the early examples of a Hartley Greenhouse designed and manufactured by Vincent Hartley, the founder of the Company. The Greenhouse, still with its panes of glass, was sold after 11 bids, for £510.10p. Other than properties and antiques what other investments do you know of that, after 50 years of use ( not just locked up gathering dust), will fetch a price more than 5 times its original cost ! We did try bidding for it but some lucky gentleman beat us to it. Good luck to him! That’s why we say: NOTHING ELSE IS A HARTLEY and we would challenge “any” other greenhouse company to find one of their 50 year old structures that has sold for more than five times its original purchase price ! Most visitors commented about the way a true conservatory can be used so informally, as a room to enjoy, potter around, grow, enjoy exotic Ferns & Palms, & especially to enjoy during long and late summer nights & throughtout all seasons. One visitor commented: "Its Like having a piece of KEW in your garden"!! How true that is. In addition to a Certificate of merit for an outstanding presentation, for the first time, Hartley Botanic was also awarded the crystal trophy for EXCELLENCE of Presentation from the RHS. We are Delighted. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- PEOPLE IN GLASSHOUSES..... A Hartley is the ultimate glasshouse - creating an environment based on the Victorian vision of utilising the unpredictable British climate to the full! When Queen Victoria came to the throne in 1837, huge stuctures like those at Kew were well established, but to ordinary Victorians the opportunity to bring the glamour of the winter garden into their homes was irresistible - thus botanical conservatories were born, providing hothouse plants and exotic fruits to enrich the Victorian diet and introduce the scent of the tropics. And not just the Victorians. Today Hartley can number aristocracy, rock stars, actors and television personalities amongst their clients so whether you are a gardening professional or an enthusiastic amateur you will be in good company. The Hartley Botanic stand was designed by award-winning garden designer Claire Whitehouse who when she is not winning medals is a Garden judge for the Royal Horticultural Society. 'We were thrilled that Claire was designing for us,' says Johnny Mobasher, the Managing Director of Hartley Botanic. 'I was always aware of her reputation and admired and enjoyed her gardens but our first real contact came a couple of years ago when, beset by bad weather, plant shortage and design problems, our stand looked like it was just not going to happen in time. Claire, who was designing a different garden at the time, was passing by. Within a quarter of an hour or so, our stand was swamped with helpers and plant suppliers - it was like the cavalry arriving to save the day. Later, we won a certificate for outstanding display! I have never forgotten, so when we were looking for a designer for this year's Chelsea Flower Show, Claire was our first choice.' |

Once again, the 2007 Chelsea flower show was a huge success. Once again, The Hartley stand looked fantastic. On display were 5 greenhouses ranging from the Tradition Greenhouse at 6X8 right through to the loved Kew-Conservatory Orangery. Thanks to the hard work & participation of Country Homes & Interiors & Topiary Arts, the RHS awarded Hartley Botanic with a Trophy for Excellence of Presentation of which we are all very proud. Hartley Botanic was very keen to show that greenhouses could not only be used as growing spaces but also as a retreat, a garden room, a place for individuals & families to relax, eat & enjoy during all seasons. Country Homes & Interiors beautifully styled each greenhouse to show a different yet stylish & practical use. The French styles Orangery from the Kew Conservatory range, the Eco House Tradition 6 greenhouse, The Mediterranean Wisley 8 greenhouse, The Artists Retreat Vistorian Planthouse, & lastly the Growers Highgrow greenhouse from the professional range of greenhouses. The Chelsea flower show was a huge success. Despite the incessant rain, wind & moody temperature the true British spirit prevailed!! Due to tremendous hard work & imagination & practical design, the Hartley stand looked tremendous. The RHS awarded Hartley Botanic with two awards, a certificate of merit for outstanding presentation of the stand AND the RHS Chelsea Sundries Trophy awarded for excellence of presentation ( pictured).
