Greenhouse enthusiasts with pests in their garden can use eco-friendly techniques to control them, it has been argued.
In an article for the Daily Telegraph, Jean Vernon suggested pest control should be a last resort rather than a knee-jerk reaction.
This is because "for every pest there is a predator", and killing these animals denies birds and other wildlife of their natural food.
However, in some cases it is necessary and it is always important to take the least harmful route, she stated.
Ms Vernon explained: "Protect precious plants using traps, barriers and predators first. When needed, choose contact sprays and apply to the pest directly."
She added that choosing sprays that contain natural ingredients is vital, as is spraying on a still day to prevent drift.
For those who want insects in their garden, Sarah Raven wrote recently in the same paper that they should create a sheltered site protected by a wall, hedge or fence to attract species such as hoverflies and bees.
