Time is right to sow carrots

With spring forcing itself upon us, gardeners looking to establish their market garden may wish to start preparing to sow their carrot seeds.

Soil quality is essential when cultivating carrots, which can be grown in the ground, in pots or in the greenhouse.

“Get the soil conditions correct and carrots are one of the easiest vegetables to grow in the cooler climates,” suggests gardenaction.co.uk.

“Incorrect soil conditions lead to misshapen carrots – these may well cause a chuckle when dug up, but they are not so well appreciated at cooking time!”

The vegetables are a great source of vitamin A and calcium and should be sown thinly in rows spaced around six inches apart.

Earlier varieties tend to taste better and should be grown in a sunny spot, according to the website.

Maincrops prefer a slightly shaded area, especially in summer time.

The credit crunch and recession have made the prospect of using the garden and greenhouse to grow food even more appealing to UK gardeners.
Carrots, suggests the website, are among the best choices for the beginner as they can be harvested in less than three months.ADNFCR-1495-ID-19067383-ADNFCR
