A new generation of garden and greenhouse enthusiasts could benefit from the Royal Horticultural Society‘s (RHS) latest investment.
The organisation recently opened its Garden Harlow Carr education centre – a £3.3 million green building designed around a philosophy of sustainability and biodiversity.
According to the RHS, the Bramall Learning Centre will provide free educational facilities for more than 10,000 kids per year.
The s-shaped two-storey building uses a number of energy-saving technologies, including sun pipes to channel natural light into its rooms and solar panels to collect energy.
It was recently opened by Blue Peter gardener Chris Collins, who was joined by pupils from the local Beckwinshaw Community Primary School as he cut the ceremonial ribbon.
Harlow Carr boss Liz Thwaite said she was “absolutely thrilled” to have the facility open for the garden‘s 60th anniversary.
“It was a pleasure to have Chris Collins joining us to celebrate the building‘s official opening as he shares our passion for inspiring children to get involved with gardening as part of a healthy and balanced lifestyle,” she added.
Meanwhile, recent RHS research has shown that learning gardening and greenhouse skills can have a beneficial effect on children‘s confidence.
