Always save your inner toilet roles for planting seedlings or young bedding plants out in. Great insulation and protection for them whilst funnelling early shoots deeper into the soil, when plants become established they decompose quickly without harming the plant or your soil.

  7. John Hughes

    great prize

  8. Christine Prince

Hi – I was told about this last year and it really works. When you have your hair cut ask your hairdresser for it (and other surplus hair if you want) and put it round your plants and it deters snails and snugs. It can also help towards good soil.

the little windmills that you can pick up for a pound at the seaside are great for keeping mice out of your pea row or birds off your cabbages, just place them 3-4 foot apart up the row and the noise they make whilst spinning scares off pests

When tending your garden in early spring or after heavy rainfall when the ground is easily compacted, avoid standing directly on the soil and instead obtain a wide plank of wood such as a scaffold board which can be used to stand on and will spread your weight keeping your feet clean and your soil in tip top condition.

  37. lucinda duxbury

  38. su williams

Don’t put off your planting until the weather gets better, go and buy some bulbs and seeds and plant them into pots and put them on a windowsill in the house, then when the weather gets warmer you can plant them out and have a beautiful colourful garden. Take it from me, I’ve left it much too late in the past and regretted not having my plants ready, then had to spend even more money buying plants the plants I could have grown myself if I was more organised. If you’re not sure what you are doing check out websites such as this for wonderful practical advice and tips.
